Doctors get no automatic pass here...

A recent discussion with a close friend revealed some things about me. The discussion, which turned a bit heated, was about the seeming lack of respect I did not show for medical professionals as a whole. I was reminded that such professionals have had many more years of grueling education, that I did not come close to matching. I was also reminded that such studious persons of the medical field deserve my automatic respect. As I mentioned the discussion had gotten heated and I had obviously offended my friend, who is a member of the medical field as well. I did my best to offer a humble remark, not apology that I did not mean to relay disrespect to the medical field in any way. I do respect and acknowledge the efforts of medical professionals as; I do for any academic endeavor. It was not the place to offer the next few statements to my friend, for I got the signal that I needed to be silent and let the conversation ride on what they needed to say. Here is what I offer to those interested:

The medical profession is in the business of service. Those skilled professionals are entrusted with the public’s well being. The plain fact of many years invested in higher learning does not justify an automatic accolade from me. Such respect must, and I repeat, MUST be earned. All the education, titles and skills are for naught if they do not offer true help to the sick. Offering a patch over an illness with a pill, destructive chemicals, invasive and traumatic surgery are for the purpose of getting the patient to feel better in the long run. This has some real benefits. Such remedies can enable the patient to get mentally better, thus affecting the body as a whole. However, the “patch “approach does not get at the root of illnesses. Those who care not to investigate as to what is making them sick and how to start a reversal. Are letting medical professionals who either do not have the interest or knowledge of treating the body as a whole unit, to be led to slaughter like a mindless sheep. Beware of those that offer all external pharmacy and no internal pharmacy to get results of better health.

The good news for most of us is that medical professionals are embracing the holistic approach to complement what they do. THIS is a true pioneer of health. Look at how the teaching of Dr. OZ and Dr. Deepak Chopra use ALL the health building tools, not just the “patch “approach to keep one pain-free and mask the symptoms. Hire these types of medical professionals to lead you to better health. They have not let the glorification of being a Doctor get in the way of what they should be doing, healing and leading the sick to a healing path. Those medical professionals that are bound to the pharmacy and insurance institutions may have to follow strict guidelines for treatment, but also can educate themselves to ALL the health venues for helping the sick, like the fore mentioned.

Lastly, for those that think that the holistic practitioners, such as my self do not have regulations for adherence, think again, further, do some more homework to see for your self. - Federal Food Drug Cosmetic Act governs supplements sec 201 it is good, just as you would for any health care professional, look for a skill herbalist with a good track record.

Look for accreditation such as American Association of Drugless Practitioners for national recognition and accountability and state levels of accreditation and accountability such as Ohio Board of Career Colleges and Schools. If you’re holistic health practitioner has these credentials, it means they are recognized on national and state levels of competency. Also look for other governing associations that a practitioner may have affiliation to emphasize competency. As a Registered Polarity Practitioner, I belong to the American Polarity Therapy Association, a national and international, recognized governing body for Polarity Practitioners.

Two wise statements from my teachers and mentors:

“Take your medicine; it is doing something good for you…” This was offered to me when I had complained about having to take a pharmaceutical. Such pills and potions have their place and should not be discounted, but rather, counted, very carefully as a brief means to a healthy end. The other statement was given to me when some of us were commenting out of frustration of the current state of the medical profession: If I sever off my finger, I am not only going to meditate and chant, I am going to find the best darn surgeon that I can find…” Let us all be more balanced and responsible for our health.

Soften Feet with Sandstone

A piece of sandstone that fits nicely in the palm of your hand is a beauty must-have. You may be able to find a piece this size at your local quarry or garden supply retailer that carries variety of pavers in stone. Look for a piece that has some more rounded areas for finer smoothing and it should have rougher areas, to do more of a deeper exfoliating on your feet. If there is a minimal cost, it will pay for itself for about a lifetime. I have had my stone for at least 6 years.

Unlike the commercial pedicure bricks that disintegrate, this natural rock works very efficiently in sloughing off rough skin of the feet. I find it especially useful for the ragged areas of the cuticles around the toes. It even smoothes out rough toe nails. Use when you are soaking your feet for the very best results. Finish with real Shay Butter or Vita E oil for that “Just from the salon feel and look”.

Extract from a Seed

A friend recently returned from a wonderful trip to Costa Rica and Ecuador. The food is incredibly delicious and requires those not indigenous to the region to take some dietary precautions to prevent intestinal upset. She mentioned an old favorite of mine, grapefruit seed extract. It has powerful antibacterial properties. Taken ahead of time or in case of a suspected early onset of digestive chaos, it wards off a potential painful, time consuming recovery. I have had reports of relief from possible food poisoning by many who keep the inexpensive supplement in the medicine cabinet.

Another feature of grapefruit seed extract is that it helps to dissipate yeast in the body. Yeast contributes to a number of illnesses and the unwanted retention of fat in the body.

I suggest a high quality, organic product. Paste the link below and when on the home page, do a search for “grapefruit seed extract”. There, you will find a price and size that is perfect for you. Here’s to your health.

To the Purple Rain

One musician that I do not even list on any list or even think about anymore is Prince. He is now a very religious person and not too proud of his earlier creations of his career in the 1980’s. His epic song, “Purple Rain” was one of my anthems as a young woman in her 20’s back then. The songs deeper meaning just hit me and, instead of giving my interpretation, I humbly submit a cherished quote from a Master:

Thoth- They that are guided go not astray but they that are lost can not find a straight path.

The Purple Rain flows within…To reach it, seek those who reside there to guide the way.

What About Gout?

What about Gout?

Gout is the result of an over accumulation of uric acid, that forms crystals in the body, resulting in severe joint pain. Some culprits that may trigger an episode are:

Stress-This causes the body to become too acidic, away from the natural body’s Ph balance. Also, the immune response is weakened by stress, thus rendering it less potent to help balance imbalances. Remember, like the Universe, we are delicately structured for just the right balance. Upsetting this equilibrium precipitates dis-ease. So RELAX…Try meditation, Yoga, prayer, chanting, singing, deep breathing to open the vital pathways in the body to begin to heal.

Diet- Eating foods that cause the body to make more acid such as, too much meat, organ meats, not combining foods correctly for proper digestion. I have had reported relief from clients who simply added some alkalinizing foods to their diets. Some of these foods are: cherries, lemons, especially in every glass of water consumed, avocadoes and sprouts. When eating meat, make sure the proportion is no bigger than the palm of the hand. Combine meats with fresh and lightly cooked veggies.

Medications-An RN, BSN of Columbus, a colleague and life-long friend (35 years), stated after she noted a change in a patient’s medication, “the symptoms were alleviated”. She goes on to remark, “Too many times one cause is targeted, when it may be as simple as a medication dose or brand change to bring about a remission”.

My father endured Gout off and on. He found taking some baking soda, couple of teaspoons in a full glass of water helped bring about a faster remission. Baking Soda has sodium bicarbonate, a great alkalinizer. Taking this remedy at bed-time until results occur is most helpful. If loose stools, diarrhea, occurs, take just one teaspoon full until symptoms subside.

Feed the Skin

Feed the Skin

I was asked lately about skin rashes on babies. Psoriasis, seborrhea and eczema are very prevalent among persons of all ages. One would wonder why a fresh, new baby would get these conditions. We know food allergies are rampant. Cow’s milk is most destructive these days. This is because of some of the processing of the milk, not the product itself. Pasteurization has all but eliminated the healthy probiotics in milk, making it a precipitator of imbalance in the body. Milk is good for rebuilding after an illness. The milk must be of high, organic quality. Raw Kefir, also known as Qephor, is milk with the good stuff not withdrawn from it. A good source of bi-available nutrients, probiotics and calcium. There is much debate on the matter of this product due to the worries of non-pasteurization. It is illegal to have it in some places. WOW.

So, what to do…Castor oil. Used by many of our parents, grandparents ancestors. Going even further, used by the Ancient Egyptians as a cure for many ailments. I know, if you have tasted the oil, it is not the most palatable. Well, you do not have to ingest it. Rub it on the body. Here is the secret: Rub it on the liver area of the body. That is right, the right side of the upper abdomen is the liver area and castor oil will sink right into that organ to begin detoxing your body. Light application to affected areas of the skin may be very helpful. Just go light so the skin can still breathe.

Sensual Reverence for a Peach

Some evenings, I enjoy sitting on my backyard deck and feel the sun. I do this during various times in the day and notice the power of the moment. It is in very pure truth that that exact moment is the very best. The other day, I had a very fresh peach in my palms. It was one of the darker ones on the peach tree in the yard. It was soothingly warm from the sun, rather like something one would like to snuggle up to because of its warmth. I held the luscious edible jewel up to my nose and waved it from side to side, relishing in its peachy bouquet. It was alluring in its delicacy. Taking the fruit to my mouth for the first bite was done carefully, so as not to loose any of the juices that would no doubt burst forth with the impact of my sinking teeth into its sweet flesh. I did loose some drops, for the gift of its fluid nectar was quite full. Savoring the bite in my grateful mouth, I chewed until the morsel was a creamy mouthful. I paused to swallow and experience the abundance of this gift. I knew the nutrients would assimilate into my very cells with goodness and heavenly energy. I finished the peach, slowly, deliberately; so as to eat to live, not live to eat. This peach was as good as my grandmother’s peaches in Arkansas when I was a little girl. Then, I ate greedily; the flies and bees were trying to advance on the juice running down my chin. I remember that goodness and this past day, I experienced that same precious moment, in a holy, sacred time. A sensual moment between a woman and her peach…

Eat with reverence, slowly, in consciousness and you will begin to notice health changes…

Silky Skin and More

Skin Brush for Your Health

Using a vegetable fiber brush with a long wood handle, slowly dry brush every part of your body before showering. A youthful glow will appear.

According to Dr. Linda Berry from Internal Cleansing, the basic principle is to brush from the outermost points of the body (hands and feet) toward the center. Do the upper body toward the heart and the lower body toward the abdomen. Begin with gentle strokes. Use a softer brush for your face. If vegetable brush is too hard at first, put a thin nylon stocking over the brush and use.

What does skin brushing do?

• Improves your lymphatic system

• Helps remove toxins from the body

• Stimulates the sweat glands

• Increases circulation

• Rejuvenates the skin

• Aids weight loss and loss of cellulite

Reference: Yerba Prima

I have been skin brushing for a while and I do it everyday, whenever I bathe, which can be over 3 times in the summer time. I have noticed more tone and skin that is silky to the touch. That long handle really allows the difficult areas on the back to be reached. It is truly a pampering with noticeable benefits!

Another Star

We look at the many stars hanging in the black onyx heavens and distinguish the subtle differences. One twinkles more than another, the next is brighter, it's close neighbor seems to pulse with inner light. We see them all and honor the unique attributes, one of the Godz many gifts to us. An offering in variety that appeals to the souls senses and delights our natural state of being. We marvel  at  what possibilities they bring. What energies we may capture from them. What pure love they hold in mystery.  Of all these wonders, we are drawn to a particular star that speaks in light and radiance only to it's mate in form, bound to earth.

My lips

Here are some useful tips for healthy lips on your face...
A moist cloth rubbed in just the right amount of friction for you will slough off chapped skin. Chapped lips may not only be due to dry environment. It may be indicative of a type of lip fungus caused by petroleum products. Yes, I know, I find the products effective too. But, they seal in too mmuch moisture, not letting the skin breathe enough, thus setting up a perfect host for fungus. Instead, try more gentle oils such as sesame or olive oil. Very good to put on at night after exfoliating. For some sexy color, try a natural Henna stain, known as Mehndi in India. Those lips you see on my profile picture are stained with a Henna stain called Marvest wine. Hows about a little kiss?!

Ducks in a pond

I tell this story in my Yoga class for holding on to "dead in the water " issues.
Two peaceful ducks in a serene pond floated upon the quiet currents with no worries of each other. Aware of the others presence, they both paid little attention of the closing distance between them. Such thoughts in a duck's mind could have been; " I see you over there, getting too close...", or " This is my space, duckie, back off!."
Once the distance became too short to ignore, the two ducks reached out and "touched" one another with fierce peckings, obnoxious  quacks and demonstrative flapping of wings. Then it all abruptly ended with one crescendo of wings extended full bredth and a gravity defying stand upon the water with their duck feet holding them high above the water's surface. They retreated to the opposite corners of the pond with one last , "in your face" quack. Then all was silent once again. Forgotten was the agressive  display a few seconds before. It just roled off their backs. Serenity returned as quickly as it left.
You decide the moral of the story...

Food for Recovery

By now we all are aware of foods wonderful ability to make us, as well as some foods can certainly, "break" us. Natural foods that grow either under ground such as beets and carrots ; just above the ground like squash ; 2 feet  to about 6 feet in height which includes grains such as corn, and beans ; foods growing above 6 feet, like fruit and nuts. that grow from trees. Selecting these foods according to your needs, body type, activity level and mental constitution is the ancient art of Ayurveda. Yes, there is an art that anyone can learn to master to get the fullest potential out of the foods they eat. This ancient art that means in Sanskrit, "Wheel of Life", " Life Science", is from India. It is the talk I talk and the walk I walk. I have had personal improvements and recoveries from this system.

Share Gifts

From the Deepak Chopra web site:

Everyone has a purpose in life . . . a unique gift or special talent to give to others. And when we blend this unique talent with service to others, we experience the ecstasy and exultation of our own spirit, which is the ultimate goal of all goals.
I will put the Law of Dharma into effect by making a commitment to take the following steps:
1. Today I will lovingly nurture the god or goddess in embryo that lies deep within my soul. I will pay attention to the spirit within me that animates both my body and my mind. I will awaken myself to this deep stillness within my heart. I will carry the consciousness of timeless, eternal Being in the midst of time-bound experience.
2. I will make a list of my unique talents. Then I will list all the things that I love to do while expressing my unique talents. When I express my unique talents and use them in the service of humanity, I lose track of time and create abundance in my life as well as in the lives of others.
3. I will ask myself daily, “How can I serve?” and “How can I help?” The answers to these questions will allow me to help and serve my fellow human beings with love.

Capture the Day

My youngest son, Ryan has always said profound things. Now, at age 17, he is quite the self made philosopher. When Ryan was about 4 years old he said a phrase that never left , nor will leave, my memory. He sat in his car seat, looking out of the van window. As he gazed at the sun setting over the Maumee River, he said, reverently; "Soon it will be later..." Need I say more?

Read about my efforts to live up to this phrase:" Capture the day...It is your's for the taking!"

Breathe with Fruit

Ayurveda, India's 5000 year old holistic system of health, applies certain foods to assist the body in healing. My asthma has been a challenge and I try holistic homeopathic remedies as well as an inhaler. My wise teacher, Damien, once told me, " Keep taking your medicine. It is doing something good." Even though I do not like to take pharmeceuticals. they serve a purpose as well. Getting yourself to a state of recovery will enable the possibility of not needing the medicine in the long run. Anyway, eating plenty of fruit helps to activate the element of air in the body. Fruits are light, digest rather quickly and help to clean out stagnant air and water in the body. Fruit gets things moving, and when waiting to get a good breath, we want all the help we can get. Check out my school site for information on Ayurveda, herbs and holistic tips.

Life Changing Academia

I have always been on my tru path, regardless of my awareness. Sometimes, I chased around in circles, my tail just out of reach. Sometimes the realization of where I was headed was so sacred as to summon many tears. At long last, to arrive in a direction that leaves no doubt as to the purpose of this life is most humbling and powerful. It started with an attendance of incredible classes based on the theory of energy dating back to the times of Hermes. My graduation from this institution impacted my life so profoundly, so clearly, that I have to give my gratitude to the forces that lined up, just so, that I changed my life for the good of myself, and, in due time, for others. Read thoroughly about this place of higher learning, in the most literal sense

New Instruments

As we all are works in process and hopefully, in progress, there will be a need to relinquish the old instruments so that the new may b used for our benefit. Parting with such old and useless instruments may be a challenging and even painful process. Such things may be deeply intermeshed into the fabric of our lives. Parting may mean temporary sorrow. Speaking only from things I know...

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe
in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees
with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.

Root of Desire

Thoughts creat desire. Futuristic thoughts of fulfillment creat fear of not being fulfilled. Future is of no value to the present, so desire fulfilled is potential of a lay over between two pains. Desire can not be abolished. It is of our nature to want. Applying the polarity of neutrality will allow one to creat something much stronger than desire. Contentment.
